New South Wales police are investigating an online threat targeting another mosque in Sydney. It is alleged that a TikTok account again referenced the 2019 Christchurch shooting in New Zealand, raising concerns within the community.
The Lakemba Mosque in western Sydney reported receiving a threat on Wednesday. A group representing the Pazhtu Mosque stated that they received similar comments under a video yesterday, allegedly from the same account. These threats referenced the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand, which resulted in the deaths of 51 people, creating fear and anxiety among worshippers.
New South Wales police said in a statement: "Investigations are underway into online threats directed at two mosques in south-western Sydney." Police believe the two incidents may be linked. Two weeks ago, a 16-year-old boy was charged for allegedly making similar online threats against the Australian Islamic House mosque in Edmonson Park, highlighting the ongoing nature of this issue.
At the time, New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb said that police were taking these threats "very seriously." Western Australian police arrested the teenager just eight hours after the report was made. A group representing multiple Muslim associations has condemned these threats, emphasizing the need for community solidarity.
They stated: "The Muslim community once again feels unsafe, with many fearing for their safety as they gather in places of worship during the most sacred month and peak prayer times. This wave of Islamophobia not only threatens individuals but also undermines the fabric of Australian social harmony," stressing the importance of addressing hate speech and promoting inclusivity.
