Abstract: Jamie Foxx credits Robin Williams for his success. Foxx's Apple TV+ doc "Number One on the Call Sheet" explores Black actors' experiences in Hollywood.

Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx has stated that the late comedian and actor Robin Williams played a crucial role in his rise to become a leading man in Hollywood. Foxx emphasized that Williams had a profound impact on his career trajectory and overall success.

Foxx is the producer of Apple TV+'s latest documentary, "Number One on the Call Sheet." The documentary explores the experiences of Black actors in leading roles in the film industry, featuring interviews with numerous Hollywood stars, including Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Halle Berry, Eddie Murphy, Viola Davis, Kevin Hart, Angela Bassett, and Whoopi Goldberg. These interviews aim to reveal the true situation of Black actors in Hollywood and the challenges they face.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News Breakfast, Foxx recalled that working with Robin Williams in the 1992 comedy film "Toys" was a pivotal experience in his career and influenced the way he approached film projects later on. He stated, "I got an opportunity, like a high-end extra, no lines, no nothing." Foxx added that this experience allowed him to observe how Williams worked and managed his craft.

Foxx further explained, "But I got a chance to see how Robin Williams worked. The way he set the tone on the set was so loose, he would try 12 different takes, and they were all brilliant. So I was like, if I ever get an opportunity, I want to run a set like that." Foxx stated that Williams' control over the set and his encouragement of the actors benefited him greatly and were something he emulated in his later work and career.

Foxx won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2004 for his outstanding performance as Ray Charles in the biographical film "Ray." He has also starred in "Collateral" (2004), "Dreamgirls" (2006), Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" (2012), and as Electro in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (2014). Through these roles, Foxx has demonstrated his versatile acting abilities and range in the industry.

The documentary is divided into two parts, with the first part focusing on Black male leads in Hollywood and the second part focusing on Black female leads in the industry. Co-director Shola Lynch said in an interview with News Breakfast that the question she wanted to explore was, "What does it take to be number one for Black women in Hollywood?" Lynch hopes that through authentic interviews, viewers can feel the real situation and struggles of Black women in Hollywood and the complexities of their journey.

Lynch stated, "I felt a responsibility to tell this story in an authentic way so that they feel reflected when they watch it, and the interviews are key. I wanted something different from the media coverage. What would it be like to actually sit in a room and have a conversation with 17 women like Viola, Angela, or Halle, and ask them questions they may never have been asked? I really hope viewers feel the intimacy, authenticity, and rawness, and see that these women are still achieving, but they have also achieved." Lynch emphasized that she wanted the documentary to showcase the success stories of Black women in Hollywood and highlight their contributions.

Lynch added, "We rarely hear about the success stories of Black women, we always hear about their stories of hardship." The two-part documentary "Number One on the Call Sheet" will premiere on Apple TV+ on March 28. The documentary is expected to spark attention and discussion about Black actors in Hollywood, especially Black female actors, and their experiences within the industry.
