To help residents cope with rising living costs, Bedford Credit Union will host two cost of living fairs in Bedford and Flitwick. Organizers stated that the event aims to break the perception that "wanting to save money and be frugal is taboo," encouraging more people to actively seek ways to manage their finances. This initiative is particularly important given the current economic climate.
The non-profit community bank, owned by its members, will provide financial advice, tips, and demonstrate how to manage funds effectively. Local and national organizations, charities, and other community groups will also participate, offering their respective support and services. This collaborative approach aims to provide a comprehensive range of resources for attendees.
The bank's Marketing Manager, Katrina Allen, stated, "This isn't just for people living on the breadline, it's for everyone who is feeling the pinch." She hopes these events will help anyone looking to reduce their expenses. "The cost of living crisis seems to have been going on for a long time, and people are still struggling," highlighting the ongoing need for such support.
Ms. Allen emphasized, "It's not just about helping people save money, credit unions have a responsibility to advocate for frugality, but also to show how to get support and advice." Bedford Repair Cafe and Share: Flitwick & Ampthill will be running a free mini repair shop where people can bring damaged items to be repaired by volunteers. Share Bedford and Share: Flitwick & Ampthill also operate a library of things, where residents can rent items for a small fee instead of buying them, promoting sustainability and affordability.
In addition, the event will offer crafts and book swaps. The Citizens Advice Bureau, as well as banking, housing groups, employment advice, and family support groups will also be in attendance. Ms. Allen stated, "It's really about breaking down the taboo of wanting to save money and be frugal, and hopefully it becomes something that anyone in the town would be proud to be involved in." The cost of living fairs will be held on March 29th at the Harper Suite in Bedford and on April 12th at Parkside Hall in Ampthill, providing accessible locations for residents to participate.
