A brazen assassination occurred at Iran's Supreme Court, resulting in the deaths of two senior judges. The incident took place on Saturday morning when a gunman stormed the court in the capital Tehran, leading to the deaths of Ali Razini and Mohammad Mojise.
According to the judiciary's news website Mizan, the attacker killed himself while fleeing the scene. Additionally, a bodyguard was injured in the attack. The motive for the attack is currently unclear, but it is alleged that both judges played a role in suppressing opponents of the Islamic government since the 1980s.
The judiciary's media office stated in a release that the attack was a premeditated assassination. The statement also indicated that, based on initial investigations, the attacker had not previously been involved in any cases heard by the Supreme Court. Officials are currently investigating whether others were involved in the attack.
Both victims had worked in the judiciary for decades. At the Supreme Court, their responsibilities included confirming death penalty verdicts. Razini, 71, was one of Iran's most senior judges and had survived a previous assassination attempt in 1998. Mojise, 68, was sanctioned by the EU, the US, and Canada for alleged human rights abuses.
