Abstract: Israeli soldier sentenced to 7 months for abusing Gazan detainees at Sde Teiman. He confessed to violence in multiple incidents (Jan-June 2024).

An Israeli military court sentenced a soldier to seven months in prison after he confessed to severely abusing Palestinian detainees from Gaza at the Sde Teiman military detention center. The soldier's crimes involved physical violence and misconduct against the detainees, representing a serious breach of military discipline. This verdict underscores the commitment to upholding ethical standards within the armed forces.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the unnamed reservist soldier was convicted of "repeatedly punching detainees with his fists and using weapons while they were handcuffed and blindfolded." He also reportedly forced Palestinians to utter derogatory words, make animal noises, and beat them while they were bound and blindfolded. Such actions are unacceptable and erode the trust placed in those who serve.

According to Haaretz, the soldier reached a plea deal with prosecutors, admitting to three counts of aggravated abuse and one count of misconduct. These offenses involved four separate incidents between January and June 2024, when he was responsible for guarding trucks transporting detainees. The court also found that some unidentified masked soldiers were involved in the abuse. The investigation into these incidents remains ongoing to ensure accountability.

In addition to the imprisonment, the sentenced soldier was also given a suspended sentence and demoted to private. The IDF stated, "Soldiers are required to use the force entrusted to them in accordance with the values and orders of the IDF at all times, and especially during wartime." This reinforces the importance of adhering to the rules of engagement and ethical conduct, even under challenging circumstances.

The Sde Teiman detention facility was established 15 months after the start of the Gaza war. Since then, the facility has been at the center of reports of severe abuse. A UN commission of inquiry report stated that thousands of child and adult detainees from Gaza "have been subjected to widespread and systematic abuse, physical and mental violence, and sexual and gender-based violence constituting war crimes and crimes against humanity, including torture and rape and other forms of sexual violence." The Israeli government has denied allegations of widespread abuse and torture of detainees, and insists that it is "fully committed to international legal standards" and thoroughly investigates each complaint. The government continues to emphasize its commitment to human rights and due process.
