Abstract: A woman, surnamed Yang, is charged with attempted murder for allegedly poisoning Alex Shorey in Taiwan. Shorey suffered organ failure after the incident. Her husband's death is also under investigation.

A woman has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly poisoning a Queensland student in Taiwan. The victim, 24-year-old Alex Shorey, suddenly became critically ill while on an exchange program in Taipei last year.

Initially, it was suspected that Shorey had accidentally ingested poison at a night market, but Taiwanese police now claim he was deliberately poisoned. The suspect is a woman surnamed Yang, whom he had recently met. She allegedly laced Shorey's food and drinks with rat poison between March 24 and May 2, 2023.

As a result, Shorey was hospitalized multiple times, eventually leading to organ failure. He was flown back to Australia via an emergency medical flight last May and has been recovering at home after hospital treatment.

More than a year later, the woman has been formally charged with attempted murder. Police investigating the case discovered that the woman's British husband died in January 2023, just months before she met Shorey. The cause of his death is also under investigation.
