Abstract: Ed Sheeran denies illegal street performance in India after police stopped his impromptu set due to permit issues. He claims permission was granted.

British pop superstar Ed Sheeran has denied that he performed illegally in the streets of India. This comes after police stated that Sheeran did not obtain the necessary permits for the performance and abruptly ended his set.

The British singer-songwriter and four-time Grammy winner is currently touring the world's most populous country. In between concerts in Bangalore, he took time on Sunday to surprise locals in the tech hub with a street performance. Videos circulating on social media show a police officer cutting off his microphone as he sang his hit song "Shape of You" on Church Street, a bustling commercial center.

Local authorities stated that while Sheeran had a permit to hold concerts, it did not extend to impromptu outdoor performances. Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara said on Monday, "He is a very famous singer, so naturally there will be chaos. To prevent this, the police did not give him permission."

Sheeran denied breaking the law, claiming that he had obtained permission to perform on the streets "in that exact spot." He wrote on Instagram shortly after the incident, "We weren't just winging it," adding, "All is good."

Social media users have criticized the police for pulling the microphone cord on Sheeran mid-song, with one calling it "awful and embarrassing." Others criticized Indian police for failing to effectively prosecute crimes against women, but Sheeran "singing on the street was their line in the sand."

Sheeran is currently on a six-city tour of India, having also held a sold-out show in Mumbai last year. The huge demand for new entertainment experiences among India's young and affluent population is attracting international artists to perform in the country. British rock band Coldplay held what they called their "biggest show ever" in January at a large cricket stadium in the western city of Ahmedabad.
