According to official U.S. sources, a private plane collision occurred at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona, resulting in at least one fatality and multiple injuries. Kelly Kostecki, Scottsdale Airport's Aviation Planning and Promotion Coordinator, stated that a mid-size business jet collided with another mid-size business jet parked on private property. The incident is currently under investigation by local authorities.
Kostecki indicated that one aircraft veered off the runway and struck a parked Gulfstream G200 jet. Preliminary assessments suggest that the landing gear of the arriving aircraft may have malfunctioned, leading to the collision. At the time of the incident, there were four people on board the arriving aircraft, which originated from Austin, Texas, while one person was in the parked aircraft. Further investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause.
Scottsdale Fire Department Captain Dave Folio stated that two people were injured in the accident and have been transported to a trauma center, while another person is in stable condition at a hospital. Currently, rescue personnel are working to recover the remains of the deceased. Folio expressed, "We extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to all those affected by this incident," emphasizing the community's support during this difficult time.
Kostecki stated that the runway has been closed and will remain closed "for the foreseeable future." Scottsdale Airport is a popular hub for aircraft entering and exiting the Phoenix area, especially during large sporting event weekends, such as the Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament, which attracts large crowds and is located just a few miles from the airport. The closure is expected to cause some disruption to air travel in the region.
Notably, this incident at Scottsdale Airport follows three major aviation disasters in the United States within the past two weeks. On January 29, near Washington, D.C., a commercial airliner collided with an Army helicopter, resulting in 67 fatalities. On January 31, in Philadelphia, a medical transport plane crashed, leading to the deaths of six people on board and one person on the ground. Last week, a small commuter plane crashed in western Alaska en route to the hub community of Nome, killing all 10 people on board. These recent events have raised concerns about air safety and prompted calls for increased scrutiny of aviation regulations.
