Abstract: AFL's Finn Callaghan extended his contract with GWS until 2029, rejecting offers from Victorian clubs. He cited confidence in the Giants' future success.

Australian Football League (AFL) rising star Finn Callaghan has signed a four-year contract extension, expressing his confidence in the Greater Western Sydney Giants' ambition to win a championship. The highly-regarded midfielder will remain with the Giants until at least the end of the 2029 season, having turned down offers from Victorian home-state clubs, signaling his long-term commitment to the team.

Callaghan's contract was originally set to expire at the end of this season. Reportedly, the 21-year-old rejected a lucrative 10-year, AU$17 million offer from St Kilda, opting to stay in New South Wales, demonstrating his loyalty and belief in the Giants' future.

Club football manager Jason McCartney stated in a release: "Finn has shown in his first three seasons the enormous potential he has in the game, and we are excited to have him sign a new four-year contract. A player of Finn’s talent and age is always going to generate significant interest from other clubs, and it’s fantastic he has recommitted to the club as we see him as an important part of our future." McCartney added, "Finn can see the bright future the club has under Adam Kingsley and wants to be a part of the success we are confident is coming."

Teammate Connor Idun announced the news to the GWS players at an all-team meeting. Idun stated: "It's obviously a massive show of faith in the club, shows what we're trying to create [keeping the young core together]. As I said, absolutely rapt, enjoy the money, mate," highlighting the positive team environment and the significance of retaining key players.

Callaghan plays an important role in the Giants' midfield alongside Tom Green. Last year, in his third season in the AFL, he averaged 23 disposals, 3.6 tackles, and 3.4 clearances per game. He is the latest in a string of star players to re-sign with GWS, including Jesse Hogan, Brent Daniels, Aaron Cadman, and Sam Taylor. After being eliminated in the playoffs, GWS will begin their 2025 season on March 9 at home at Engie Stadium against Collingwood, eager to capitalize on their strengthened roster.
