The issue of drainage ditch blockages in Suva has been a long-standing problem, and according to Suva City Council (SCC) Acting Chief Executive Officer Tevita Boseiwaqa, it has been troubling city residents. The City Council is actively cooperating with relevant departments to seek solutions to improve the city's drainage system.
Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized that the SCC is proactively addressing the issue, rather than passively waiting. He pointed out that the root of the problem lies in the road drainage system and that communication has been established with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA). The FRA has taken responsibility for resolving this issue and will begin addressing the drainage problems beneath the roads.
According to Mr. Boseiwaqa, the FRA has actively intervened and expressed its willingness to repair the drainage system and maintain the road surface. Damaged culverts beneath the roads are also one of the causes of drainage problems. Surface drains should be able to drain smoothly, but due to damaged culverts, drainage is obstructed, leading to water accumulation and potholes on the roads.
"In reality, there are two aspects to the problem: one is the blockage of drainage ditches, and the other is the damage to culverts. As a result, potholes have appeared in areas such as bus stops," Mr. Boseiwaqa explained. Currently, the relevant issues have been identified, and the FRA is carrying out road surface repair work.
