Abstract: Fiji schools will implement prayer & fasting to improve teacher efficiency via "divine intervention." It's voluntary, respects religions, & aligns with national values.

The Fijian Ministry of Education recently launched an initiative to conduct prayers and fasting in schools, aiming to "empower an efficient teaching force through divine intervention." Acting Permanent Secretary Meli Nakuwa disclosed this information in a circular, stating that the initiative fully respects different religious beliefs and denominations.

The Ministry of Education has instructed all school principals across Fiji to designate specific times and dates for fasting and prayer within their schools. This measure aims to enhance the efficiency of the teaching staff and complies with Section 22 of the 2013 Constitution of Fiji.

Mr. Nakuwa noted in the circular that this initiative is also related to the strategic outcomes of The Denarau Declaration thematic areas 2 and 3, as well as Part 4 of the Fijian National Curriculum Framework concerning spiritual and values education. All school principals and staff members are encouraged to choose a day of the week specifically for prayer and fasting and incorporate it into the school's timetable.

The circular recommends fasting until noon, with student participation being voluntary. Prayer activities can be incorporated into the school's existing devotion or quiet time programs as appropriate, ensuring the smooth implementation of the initiative and student engagement.
