Manchester police announced that a four-year-old girl tragically died in a suspected arson incident at a house. Firefighters discovered the girl, who had sustained serious injuries, inside the house in the Rusholme area at approximately 12:30 AM Greenwich Mean Time. She was rushed to the hospital but was unfortunately pronounced dead, according to the Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
Police have arrested a 44-year-old woman on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. The police stated that the woman knew the victim. Detective Chief Inspector Charlotte Whalley said, "This is a truly devastating incident that has resulted in the tragic death of a young girl, and my thoughts are with her family and friends." She added, "A woman has been arrested, and I can confirm that she was known to the young girl."
Inspector Whalley emphasized that there is no further threat to the community at this time, and police are not looking for any other suspects in connection with the case. She also stated that emergency services "did everything they could" to save the young girl's life after the fire at the Gateshead Close residence. Police said firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. Investigators will "leave no stone unturned" in determining the truth of the incident.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) Area Manager Ben Levy stated that fire crews from four fire stations had been dispatched to the scene. He said, "I would like to express the sincere condolences of everyone at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to the family and friends of the young girl who sadly lost her life in this incident. Our thoughts are with them at this sad and difficult time." Mr. Levy indicated that GMFRS will work closely with the police on the investigation.
The BBC's Zoe Thost reported from the scene at around 5:30 PM, stating that the strong smell of smoke still lingered in the air. She said a police officer was standing across the road in front of the blue and white police tape, and only residents were being allowed through. A fire engine remained parked outside the house where the fire occurred. She added that a forensic team arrived at around 5:45 PM.
