U.S. President Donald Trump issued what he called a "final warning" to Hamas, demanding the release of hostages held in Gaza. President Trump conveyed his stern warning to Hamas through a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform.
Trump stated on social media that a "heavy price will be paid" if the hostages are not released, though he did not specify what kind of support would be provided to Israel. "Release all of the hostages NOW, not later, and return the bodies of those you have murdered NOW, or you will be finished," he added. "For the leadership, now is the time to leave Gaza, while you still have a chance."
Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the U.S. is engaging in direct negotiations with Hamas to secure the release of the hostages. She added that Israel had been consulted in advance. Leavitt told reporters that President Trump believes in doing what is in the best interests of the American people. Special Envoy Adam Boehler's work to free the hostages is about "genuinely doing the right thing for the American people."
According to the BBC, a Palestinian source stated that there had been "two direct meetings" between Hamas and a U.S. official, "following multiple communications beforehand." Boehler reportedly met with Hamas representatives in Doha, the capital of Qatar, in recent weeks. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office said in a statement that it had "expressed its position" regarding the direct talks, but did not provide any further information.
Qatar has hosted a Hamas base since 2012, reportedly at the request of the Obama administration. The small but influential Gulf state is a key U.S. ally in the region. It hosts a major U.S. airbase and has handled numerous delicate political negotiations, including those with Iran, the Taliban, and Russia. Alongside the U.S. and Egypt, Qatar has also played a significant role in mediating negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza.
