Golden State Warriors assistant coach Richard Agar has been suspended for three games and fined $10,000 for allegedly grabbing a journalist by the throat at an NRL event in Las Vegas. The incident has garnered widespread attention, prompting league intervention and investigation. This disciplinary action underscores the seriousness with which the NRL views such conduct.
The NRL issued Agar with a breach notice on Monday stemming from the alleged incident at Allegiant Stadium on March 2. Half of the fine will be suspended, contingent on him not committing further violations. Agar will be barred from being part of coach Andrew Webster's staff for upcoming matches against the Sydney Roosters, Wests Tigers, and Melbourne Storm. He is also prohibited from traveling with the Warriors to Australia for the latter two games, impacting team dynamics.
Agar, who has previously coached Super League teams Hull FC, Wakefield Trinity, and Leeds Rhinos, will also be required to undertake "appropriate education and training." He has five working days to respond to the breach notice. According to the journalist involved, Agar located him inside the stadium following the Warriors' 8-30 loss to the Canberra Raiders in their season opener, adding complexity to the situation.
It is believed that Agar and the journalist were acquainted during the coach's time working in the UK. The UK-based journalist was present to cover the match between Super League teams Wigan and Warrington, as well as the match between the England Women's team and Australia. Agar previously worked with Webster on the Samoan coaching staff and joined the NRL club in 2023 for Webster's first season as Warriors head coach, highlighting their established professional relationship.
