Abstract: Lautoka residents will pay higher waste fees to fund a new management system. Increased costs due to landfill location & processing are cited. "Polluter pays" principle applied. Vunato landfill serves wider area.

Residents of Lautoka will be required to pay for the new waste management services provided by the Lautoka City Council. This additional fee is intended to cover the operating costs of the completely new and upgraded waste management system planned for "Sugar City" Lautoka.

Lautoka City Council CEO Mohammed Anees Khan stated, "Citizens can expect to pay higher fees for solid waste management services due to the increased costs of waste collection and disposal." He added, "In accordance with the 'polluter pays' principle, waste generators will be responsible for bearing the increased costs."

The CEO also stated that residents should commit to improving the waste management system before the new landfill is built. At the same time, he pointed out that solid waste management costs will increase significantly because the City Council has to transport waste to more distant locations and bear higher processing costs. "Therefore, this cost needs to be shared by the citizens."

Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa recently stated that the Vunato landfill receives waste not only from within Lautoka City, but also from Nadi Town, surrounding offshore areas, and major tourist centers such as Denarau. He mentioned that the landfill has been in operation since 1968.
