The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on Tuesday that a motorcyclist who fell into a sinkhole on a Seoul street due to ground collapse was found dead after an overnight search. The incident has raised public concerns about the safety of urban infrastructure, and relevant departments have launched an investigation.
According to the safety and emergency department, the huge sinkhole, about 20 meters in diameter and 20 meters deep, appeared at an intersection in Myeongil-dong, eastern Seoul, on Monday afternoon. At the time of the accident, a motorcyclist unfortunately fell into it, and a van passing by was also affected, resulting in injuries to a woman.
Emergency department official Kim Chang-seop said at a televised briefing that the motorcyclist in his 30s was found before noon on Tuesday. He pointed out that rescuers had found his helmet, motorcycle boots, a Nissan motorcycle, and a mobile phone before finding his body. Rescuers used various equipment such as excavators and shovels for the search and rescue.
Kim Chang-seop also added that the injured woman did not fall into the sinkhole and suffered only minor injuries. Currently, the cause of the sinkhole is under investigation, and relevant experts will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the geological structure and underground pipelines to determine the cause of the accident.
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon inspected the scene of the accident on Monday evening and instructed relevant departments to identify the cause of the collapse and take all necessary measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again. The city government has pledged to strengthen the maintenance and management of urban infrastructure to ensure the safety of citizens' lives.
