Sentebale, the charity co-founded by Prince Harry, has recently been plagued by controversy. Following Prince Harry's departure from the organization, Sentebale's chair accused him of "massive bullying and harassment." This incident has sparked widespread public attention and cast a shadow over the future of the charity.
Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho co-founded Sentebale in 2006 to honor Prince Harry's late mother, Princess Diana. However, due to a dispute with Chair Sophie Chandauka, Prince Harry, Prince Seeiso, and members of the board have collectively resigned from the organization. Dr. Chandauka stated that Prince Harry's "release of the Sussex machine" damaged his relationship with the charity's 540 employees.
In a statement, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso said they resigned as patrons of Sentebale to stand in solidarity with former board members, as the relationship between the chair and the board had "broken down to the point of no return." The princes claimed that the board had asked the chair to resign, but she refused and sued the charity. Dr. Chandauka stated that her lawsuit is justified and that she is a whistleblower against "abuse of power" and "misogyny."
In an interview with Sky News, Dr. Chandauka said that Prince Harry's handling of his departure from the charity was "destructive." She claimed that Prince Harry's team had asked her to defend his wife, Meghan, in response to negative publicity, but she refused because she did not want to set a precedent of the charity becoming an extension of the Sussexes' PR machine. Currently, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso have not commented on the dispute beyond their initial statement.
Sentebale is a charity that operates in southern African countries such as Lesotho and Botswana. Meaning "forget me not" in Sesotho, it was established by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso to honor their mothers. The organization initially aimed to help young people affected by HIV/AIDS, but in April 2024, the charity underwent a "transformative agenda" and now aims to address health issues, wealth inequality, and climate resilience in both countries.
