The Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office in New Jersey announced that a former elementary school janitor has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of contaminating food in the school cafeteria intended for students and staff, as well as possessing child sexual abuse material. This sentencing reflects the severity of his crimes and the potential harm he caused.
The janitor, identified as 25-year-old Giovanni Impellizzeri, received a five-year sentence for official misconduct and a three-year sentence for possessing child sexual abuse material, with the two sentences to be served consecutively. This ensures a substantial period of incarceration for his reprehensible actions.
Impellizzeri, a resident of Vineland, was arrested in November 2023 after videos surfaced showing him contaminating food with cleaning products and bodily fluids while working at Elizabeth Moore School in Upper Deerfield Township. According to the Upper Deerfield Township School District, Impellizzeri began working at the school in September 2019.
Investigators stated that the videos also depicted Impellizzeri misusing school equipment and sharing the footage in an online chat group. During the investigation, detectives discovered that Impellizzeri possessed child pornography. He was subsequently charged with distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material. In November 2023, prosecutors revealed that Impellizzeri admitted to tampering with the food, claiming he was doing "the devil's work."
In January of this year, Impellizzeri pleaded guilty to second-degree official misconduct and third-degree possession of child sexual abuse material. Impellizzeri will be eligible for parole after serving five years in state prison and will be subject to lifetime parole supervision upon his release. This extended supervision aims to prevent future offenses and protect the community.
