Emergency services in the Aragon region of northern Spain said on Saturday that at least 30 people were injured in a ski lift accident at the Astún ski resort in the Pyrenees. Regional emergency services stated that 10 people required hospital treatment, including two with serious injuries.
Spanish national broadcaster TVE reported that about 80 people were trapped on the cable car after the accident. "It was like the cable came off, the chairs bounced and people were thrown off," an eyewitness told TVE. Fernando Beltrán, the Spanish government's representative in Aragon, later posted on X that "all skiers affected by the accident" had been evacuated and the injured were receiving treatment.
The cause of the accident is currently unclear. Following the incident, multiple helicopters were deployed to the area to rescue those trapped and transfer the injured to nearby hospitals. Images and videos on social media showed many people lying on the snow below the ski lift.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was "shocked" by the news of the accident and expressed his condolences to the injured and their families. The ski resort stated on X that it was "working with the emergency services," and its management "expressed shock at the incident and support for those affected."
