Abstract: Australia warns against Tiger Head alcohol in Laos after six tourist deaths, including two teens. Methanol poisoning suspected. Avoid strong drinks.

The Australian government has issued a warning to travelers after Laotian authorities announced a ban on the sale and consumption of Tiger Head Vodka and Tiger Head Whiskey. This follows the deaths of six tourists, including Melbourne teenagers Bianca Jones and Holly Bowers, who had consumed these alcoholic beverages.

The Australian government's Smartraveller service today released updated travel advice, warning Australians in Laos to avoid these products due to a "serious safety risk."

The remains of Bowers and Jones have been returned to Australia. They died a week ago in separate hospitals in neighboring Thailand, after being transferred for more intensive treatment following suspected methanol poisoning. The two 19-year-olds had consumed free drinks at the Nana Backpackers Hostel in Vang Vieng, a popular backpacker destination in northern Laos, and then drank at other bars before being found ill the next day.

The updated Smartraveller advice states: "In November 2024, several foreign nationals, including Australians, suffered methanol poisoning after consuming alcoholic beverages." The advice also adds: "Be aware of potential risks, particularly with strong alcoholic drinks, including cocktails."

The Australian government's current overall advice is to exercise normal safety precautions in Laos, but to take a higher level of precaution in certain areas, including Xaisomboun and Bokeo provinces.
