It has been reported that an Air New Zealand flight was grounded overnight at Sydney Airport, triggering an investigation into a significant security threat. The flight, NZ-247, arrived from Wellington at approximately 5:40 pm, at which point tactical operations teams, paramedics, and firefighters were called to the scene.
However, less than an hour later, all emergency services were stood down, and the Airbus aircraft was moved to the terminal. It is understood that the flight, carrying 154 staff and passengers, was originally scheduled to land in Sydney and was not an emergency landing. No injuries were reported among those on board.
A passenger revealed to 9News that police personnel placed luggage on the floor, which was then examined by police dogs. "Then we walked through a corridor and spoke to a police officer who recorded our details," the passenger said. After the aircraft was released from the tarmac, Air New Zealand confirmed "a security incident was reported."
Air New Zealand's Chief Operational Integrity and Safety Officer, Captain David Morgan, said in a statement on Saturday evening, "Emergency services assessed the aircraft after it landed, and passengers were safely disembarked." As a result of the incident, Air New Zealand canceled flight NZ-248, which was scheduled to return to Wellington. "Air New Zealand apologizes for the inconvenience caused to passengers on both flights," Morgan added. "The safety and security of all passengers and our crew is our top priority."
A spokesperson for the Australian Federal Police (AFP) stated that AFP members at Sydney Airport responded to an incident on an aircraft en route to the airport. Police tactical operations teams, paramedics, and firefighters were called to the scene. "Investigations are ongoing," the spokesperson said, "There is no threat to the community." No further details were provided.
