Mary Fowler, having regained her form, is set to rejoin the Matildas, Australia's women's national football team, after opting out of the squad for their most recent international window. Fowler was rested during the home friendlies in November due to fatigue, but she is now ready to return and participate in the SheBelieves Cup tournament in the United States later this month. Her return is expected to bolster the team's attacking options.
The additional rest appears to have greatly benefited the 21-year-old Fowler. Since the beginning of the year, the Manchester City forward has scored three goals and provided four assists in five games. In addition to Fowler's return, interim coach Tom Sermanni has also recalled the experienced midfield duo of Clare Wheeler and Katrina Gorry. These experienced players will provide stability and creativity to the team's midfield.
Melbourne City forward Holly McNamara has also earned a recall to the national team after a successful return to the Australian Women's League (ALW) following an ACL injury. Brisbane Roar winger Sharn Freier is in line to win her first national team cap, becoming the only uncapped player in Sermanni's squad. Freier has scored 7 goals in 10 ALW appearances so far this season, showcasing her goal-scoring ability.
Australia will face Japan in their tournament opener on February 21 (Australian Eastern Time), followed by matches against the United States and Colombia. The team roster is as follows:
**Goalkeepers:** Mackenzie Arnold, Chloe Lincoln, Teagan Micah
**Defenders:** Ellie Carpenter, Steph Catley, Charlotte Grant, Winonah Heatley, Clare Hunt, Alanna Kennedy, Natasha Prior
**Midfielders:** Kyra Cooney-Cross, Daniela Galic, Katrina Gorry, Emily van Egmond, Clare Wheeler, Tameka Yallop
**Forwards:** Caitlin Foord, Mary Fowler, Sharn Freier, Michelle Heyman, Holly McNamara, Hayley Raso, Cortnee Vine.
