Manchester City Football Club has stated it is "appalled" to learn that its striker, Khadija "Bunny" Shaw, suffered racist and misogynistic abuse following Sunday's Women's Super League defeat to Arsenal. The club has reported the content to the relevant authorities and will launch an investigation into the matter.
Shaw, a 28-year-old Jamaican international, has decided not to publicly share the information to avoid giving the perpetrators any exposure. This decision is aimed at preventing further encouragement of their vile behavior.
Manchester City said in a statement: "Discrimination of any kind, whether in the stadium or online, is intolerable and has absolutely no place in football or wider society." The club also expressed its full support for Shaw and condemned the disgusting treatment she has received.
"Bunny has taken the decision not to publicly share the messages she has received in order to not give any publicity to those who sent them," the statement added. "The club is conducting an investigation and will fully support Bunny with the disgusting treatment she has been subjected to."
Shaw made her 100th appearance for Manchester City as a substitute in Sunday's 3-4 home defeat to Arsenal. The forward has scored 86 goals for City and has been named the club's Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons.
