A nationwide power outage in Sri Lanka has been attributed to a monkey that intruded into a substation of the island nation's power grid. Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody told reporters that a monkey came into contact with a grid transformer, causing a system imbalance.
Minister Jayakody pointed out that the monkey intrusion occurred in the southern suburbs of Colombo. Currently, engineers are working hard to repair the damage and strive to restore power as soon as possible.
Power was being gradually restored later on Sunday local time. The Ceylon Electricity Board confirmed that the power outage was caused by an emergency at a substation south of Colombo, but did not provide further details.
In the summer of 2022, Sri Lanka experienced months of power outage difficulties as the country of 22 million people plunged into an economic crisis. Gas stations ran out of gasoline and diesel, forcing thermal power plants to ration power for 13 hours a day.
The Australian men's cricket team is currently in Sri Lanka and swept the hosts in the two-Test series held in Galle on Sunday.
