Cronulla Sharks captain Cameron McInnes has stated he has "zero concerns" about the various distractions ahead of the Sharks' season-opening game against the reigning premiers, Penrith Panthers, in Las Vegas. He is confident that the team can maintain focus amidst the excitement surrounding the historic event.
The Sharks will arrive in Las Vegas later than the other three NRL teams participating in the opening weekend fixtures next Sunday (AEDT). While the Penrith Panthers, Canberra Raiders, and New Zealand Warriors have already arrived in Las Vegas to acclimatize, the Sharks will arrive on Monday (AEDT) after a weekend training block at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. This strategic approach aims to optimize their preparation.
This mirrors a similar itinerary taken by the Sydney Roosters last year, with Trent Robinson's side basing themselves at UCLA before defeating the Brisbane Broncos. McInnes brushed aside suggestions that the Sharks might be overwhelmed by casinos and bars upon arriving in Las Vegas. He believes the team is mature enough to handle the environment.
“I couldn’t care less about any of that,” McInnes said. “I genuinely think the boys are excited to perform well in this game. Obviously, there will be some cool experiences, but sitting in casinos and stuff like that isn’t one of them. I don’t think the boys are too interested in that either.” His statement underscores the team's commitment to the game.
McInnes stated there was no need to remind his teammates to focus on the task at hand in Las Vegas. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but at the same time, we wouldn’t be doing any of this (visiting casinos) if we weren’t playing footy,” he said. “If you want to ruin the footy, then it’s not going to be enjoyable.” He emphasized the importance of prioritizing their performance.
The Sharks and Panthers will play the second NRL game in Las Vegas, with the Raiders and Warriors clashing earlier in the day. The Australian Jillaroos will play a Test against England before the Sharks versus Panthers match. This promises a full day of rugby league action for fans in attendance.
