Abstract: Fyre Festival 2, organized by Billy McFarland, is planned for May/June in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Promises include music, "expeditions," and "world-class accommodations." The original 2017 event was a disaster.

The highly controversial "Fyre Festival" appears to be getting a sequel. Founder Billy McFarland has announced that "Fyre Festival 2" is scheduled to take place from May 30th to June 2nd on Isla Mujeres, Mexico. This announcement has sparked both excitement and skepticism among potential attendees and industry observers alike.

McFarland's press release on his X account describes "Fyre Festival 2" as "a three-day Caribbean Mexican adventure, exploring during the day with your favorite stars and gathering at night for music." The press release also promises "world-class accommodations" and "expeditions led by international and local talent, leading guests on groundbreaking daytime excursions and gathering for intimate beach performances at night." The performer lineup has not yet been announced, leaving attendees to speculate on who might be involved.

McFarland was the founder of the inaugural "Fyre Festival" in 2017. The event quickly gained popularity on social media after being heavily promoted by influencers and celebrities, but ultimately ended in disaster. Participants who spent thousands of dollars on tickets arrived on the Exuma island in the Bahamas to find chaotic organization, rudimentary tent accommodations, and the infamous meager cheese sandwiches, leading to widespread disappointment and outrage.

Many musicians who were originally scheduled to perform, such as Blink-182 and Major Lazer, withdrew before the event began. In 2018, McFarland pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, and making false statements to federal law enforcement, and was sentenced to six years in prison. He was released in 2022 after serving nearly four years, with many questioning whether he had learned from his past mistakes.

"I know a lot of people think I'm crazy for doing this again. But I'm not crazy if I don't do it," McFarland said in a statement. "After years of reflection and now meticulous planning, the new team and I have amazing plans for Fyre 2. The adventurers who trust the vision and are brave enough to try will help make history. Thanks to my partners for giving me a second chance." McFarland first announced his plans for "Fyre Festival 2" in 2023, with plans to hold it in the Caribbean last year, but according to the Los Angeles Times, that plan was canceled and tickets were refunded.
