The Parramatta Eels have successfully re-signed Mitchell Moses, ensuring the halfback will finish his career with the Eels. This contract extends Moses' tenure to 2029 and does not include any early termination options. This move is particularly important for stabilizing the team's roster, especially considering the uncertainty surrounding five-eighth Dylan Brown's future.
Originally, Moses' contract was set to expire at the end of next year, and he would have become a free agent if the Parramatta Eels had not re-signed him before November 1st. But that is no longer the case, as the number seven has signed an extension that will keep him with the team until he is 35 years old. More importantly, according to the Australian Associated Press (AAP), the contract does not contain any options for either party to terminate the agreement early, which is undoubtedly a major positive for the Parramatta Eels, who have been plagued by such contracts recently.
Eels CEO Mark O'Neill stated, "Mitch has been consistently good for many years, and he was outstanding in 2024 in particular. His performances in last year's State of Origin series were outstanding, proving he belongs on that stage. His recent appointment as captain is another step forward in his development, and a very proud moment for him, his family, and our club. Having a player of Mitch's caliber commit the remainder of his career to the Eels is fantastic news for his teammates, our partners, members, and the entire Eels community."
Despite still battling foot pain from an injury sustained last March, Moses is expected to start for Parramatta in their game against the Melbourne Storm next Sunday. The smooth re-signing of the Eels captain will also alleviate pressure on new coach Jason Ryles. When Moses re-signed in 2023, his future and the possibility of him returning to the Wests Tigers caused a great deal of turmoil. In 2021, former captain Clint Gutherson faced a similar situation regarding his future, ultimately choosing to re-sign as well.
Although Brown's contract with Parramatta does not expire until 2031, his contract is now also a point of contention. According to the contract terms, Brown has multiple options; he can choose to stay with the club or leave at the end of the season. The five-eighth needs to decide before Round 10 this year whether to accept the option to extend his contract to 2026 or accept lucrative offers from teams like Newcastle. The nature of Moses' contract means that Parramatta does not have to worry about the club captaincy, allowing him to be a mainstay of the team for the next five years.
