Acting DG Naviti to set up structure for new ministry

Abstract: William Naviti is acting DG of the new Fisheries Ministry. He will transfer resources in 6 months. The ministry consolidates fisheries, ocean, & maritime affairs.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has appointed William Naviti as the acting Director-General (DG) of the newly established Ministry of Fisheries, Ocean Resources and Maritime Affairs.

Mr. Naviti currently serves as the Director of Fisheries and possesses extensive experience and expertise in the fisheries sector. According to acting Secretary of the Public Service Commission, Stephen Bong, Mr. Naviti is tasked with overseeing the transfer of resources and funds to the new ministry within a six-month timeframe, in accordance with the government's decision.

Following its formation, the government announced the creation of a new ministry specifically dedicated to Fisheries, Ocean Resources, and Maritime Affairs. Simultaneously, the government also announced the abolishment of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, merging it with the Ministry of Justice and Community Services.

An order signed and published by the Prime Minister allows for the transfer of fisheries functions from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry and Biosecurity to the new ministry. Furthermore, maritime affairs and the Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities, as well as ocean affairs from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are also being transferred to the new ministry.

The Public Service Commission stated, "Leadership is crucial in fisheries management as it plays a vital role in Vanuatu's food security, promoting sustainable practices, and must guide communities towards responsible fishing behavior." The Public Service Commission also expressed its expectation for Mr. Naviti to provide leadership in the establishment and service delivery of the new ministry.

Acting Secretary of the Public Service Commission, Mr. Bong, stated that the commission anticipates holding a meeting tomorrow to approve the organizational structure of the new ministry. He further added that an acting Director of Fisheries has been appointed during Mr. Naviti's tenure in the new role.
