According to sources from the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order formally designating English as the official language of the United States.
According to a fact sheet regarding the forthcoming executive order, the order would allow government agencies and organizations that receive federal funding to decide for themselves whether to continue providing documents and services in languages other than English. Trump was originally expected to sign the order today, but as of Friday evening, the White House has not announced that the order has been signed and did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This executive order would revoke a directive from former President Bill Clinton that required government agencies and organizations receiving federal funds to provide language assistance to non-English speakers. The White House stated that designating English as the national language "would help promote unity, improve government efficiency, and create pathways for civic participation."
According to "US English," an organization advocating for English to be the official language of the United States, more than 30 states have already passed laws designating English as the official language. For decades, members of Congress have repeatedly proposed legislation to designate English as the official language of the United States, but these efforts have been unsuccessful. Shortly after taking office, Trump removed the Spanish-language version of the White House official website, a move that caused confusion and discontent among Hispanic advocacy groups and others.
The White House indicated at the time that it was committed to restoring the Spanish-language version of the website, but as of Friday, that version had not been restored. The White House has not immediately responded to inquiries about whether the Spanish-language version of the website will be restored. Trump also shut down the Spanish-language version of the website during his first term, which was restored after President Joe Biden took office. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the news of this executive order on Friday.
