Tan France isn't typically associated with words like rugged, violent, or threatening. He rose to fame as a fashion expert on "Queer Eye," known for his kindness and patience, gently encouraging those in need to reinvent themselves and reclaim their lives. He has built a reputation on empathy and genuine connection.
However, in Disney+'s new series, "Deli Boys"—his first acting role—he completely overturns his previous image. The show tells the story of two spoiled brothers who, after their father's death, discover his secret life of crime and take over the family's convenience store business. The dark comedy explores themes of family, loyalty, and unexpected responsibility.
Tan France plays Zubair in the series, a foul-mouthed gangster who threatens to "cut off your dicks and shove them up your asses," a stark contrast to his past image of promoting French tucks and offering supportive smiles on "Queer Eye." We interviewed the fashion icon turned actor to understand the reasons behind this transformation, but our conversation quickly evolved into a discussion about his true passion in life: snacks. This unexpected turn highlighted his playful personality.
When asked if playing a gangster was a form of emotional release, Tan France said the role brought him great joy. He explained that in "Queer Eye" and other projects, he only had to be himself, which made him realize how easy it was to be himself on television. He didn't need to do much preparation, just talk to people like a "performing monkey." He loves "Deli Boys" and the character Zubair because it forced him to push himself beyond his limits of decades, challenging areas he hadn't challenged in years. He hopes the audience can see the effort he put into the role, even if they can still see some of his own personality shining through.
Tan France also shared his thoughts on his younger self, believing that the younger him would think the current him "being so happy on TV" was very uncool. He recalled being a moody teenager, a stark contrast to the happy, outgoing image seen on "Queer Eye." He also talked about the differences between British and American people, noting that Americans are always so happy, while the British are more reserved. Furthermore, he shared his worst fashion moment, which was wearing a Von Dutch outfit for his 21st birthday, and stated that he realized he wasn't a hot white girl from California. Finally, he shared his favorite song from last year and expressed his love for British snacks, especially Walkers Prawn Cocktail and Cheese & Onion crisps, chocolate Hobnobs, and British chocolate.
