Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that individuals affected by Tropical Cyclone Jasper and who meet the eligibility criteria will be able to apply for the government's Disaster Recovery Allowance. This allowance is designed to provide short-term income support to individuals who have experienced income loss directly due to the disaster.
Albanese stated in an interview this morning that applications will be open from 2 PM tomorrow via the myGOV website. He also pointed out that disaster recovery will be a long process, and the government will continue to provide support throughout the recovery efforts.
The Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) will provide assistance for up to 13 weeks to employees, small business owners, and farmers who have lost their livelihoods due to the disaster. The allowance amount will be based on individual circumstances, paid fortnightly, and equivalent to the maximum rate of JobSeeker Payment or Youth Allowance, rather than being a lump sum payment.
To apply for the Disaster Recovery Allowance, applicants need to have a myGOV account and a Centrelink account. Applications can be made by selecting "Make a claim" on the Centrelink homepage, then selecting "Help in an emergency," and finally selecting "Apply for Disaster Recovery Allowance." If there are any questions, you can also call the Centrelink emergency information hotline for assistance.
In addition, Queensland has announced Emergency Hardship Assistance (EHA) for eligible affected residents, with individuals receiving AUD 180 and families of five or more receiving up to AUD 900 to purchase food, clothing, medical supplies, or obtain temporary accommodation. New South Wales is also expected to launch disaster grants soon. Other available assistance includes one-off income support, other financial hardship grants, and a three-month suspension of Centrelink debts.
