Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott recently delivered harsh criticism of former U.S. President Donald Trump, triggered by Trump's false statements about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his implied inclination to favor Russia in negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Abbott, who has historically been a staunch supporter of Trump, stated that Trump's blaming Zelenskyy for Russia's invasion of Ukraine is akin to "living in a fantasy world." In an interview with Times Radio in the UK, Abbott clearly stated, "Putin started this war. Anyone who doesn't think that is living in a fantasy world."
Abbott emphasized that while everyone desires peace, it should not come at the cost of surrendering to a brutal aggressor. The foundation for peace must be that Ukraine can continue to exist in an independent and secure environment. He also pointed out that if Ukraine cannot join NATO, then Western countries must send ground troops as part of a peace agreement; otherwise, a so-called ceasefire agreement is effectively a sell-out.
Abbott's criticism stems from a series of extraordinary statements made by Trump. Trump falsely claimed that Zelenskyy is an unelected dictator with little popular support and the instigator of the Russia-Ukraine war—arguments that align closely with the Kremlin's propaganda. The recent peace talks between the United States and Russia in Saudi Arabia, noticeably absent of Ukrainian representation, have raised concerns that Moscow's demands will be accommodated in any ceasefire agreement.
When asked about Trump's remarks, Australia's current Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reaffirmed Australia's support for Ukraine but did not directly criticize the U.S. President. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton also stated that Trump "made a mistake" on the Zelenskyy issue. He emphasized that the idea that Zelenskyy or the Ukrainian people started the war or are responsible for it is completely wrong. Australia should stand firmly with the Ukrainian people, as this is a fight for civilization, and Putin is a brutal dictator to whom we should not concede an inch.
