The Queensland government will review a proposal to build a new 60,000-seat Olympic stadium in Brisbane's Victoria Park, 9News Australia has exclusively reported. This ambitious project aims to provide a state-of-the-art venue for the Olympic Games and other major events.
Previously, sources revealed to 9News Australia that an independent review panel had recommended this site for the stadium. Now, the proposed stadium's size has also been revealed. It is understood that the state cabinet will review the proposal next Monday and is expected to announce plans, including the construction of a proposed athletes' village near the Brisbane exhibition grounds, next week. The construction of the athletes' village would further enhance the Olympic infrastructure.
The review panel believes there is not enough time to rebuild the Gabba stadium into an Olympic venue before the Games. Furthermore, the panel rejected the Australian Swimming Association's proposal to build a national aquatic center in Spring Hill, suggesting that swimming competitions be held at the Brisbane Live arena and a new venue to be built next to the Gabba stadium. This recommendation aims to optimize existing infrastructure and minimize construction time.
However, these findings may present a political hurdle for Premier Steven Miles, as he pledged during his campaign that no new stadiums would be built during his term. This commitment could create challenges in gaining public and political support for the proposed stadium project.
It is understood that the government is still considering all options and has not yet made a final decision. The government is carefully weighing the benefits and drawbacks of each option before committing to a specific course of action.
