With the rapid rise and widespread application of artificial intelligence, we are witnessing the transformation of almost every industry. Advanced technologies, including Generative AI (Gen AI) and quantum computing, are continuously changing the way we live, work, and even interact. However, as innovation accelerates, so do the risks, necessitating proactive measures to mitigate potential downsides.

Today, we live in an era of increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. The cost is also quite high: according to Cybersecurity Ventures, the global cost of cybercrime is expected to reach $10.5 trillion this year. Therefore, cybersecurity remains a top priority, demanding constant vigilance and adaptation.

The UAE has emerged as a global leader in cybersecurity, with its recently released National Cybersecurity Strategy highlighting its efforts to set high standards in cyber resilience. In an exclusive interview, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Al-Kuwaiti, Head of Cybersecurity for the UAE Government, delved into the factors driving the country's cybersecurity success, how it is preparing to address emerging threats, and the role of artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and global partnerships in ensuring future security.

Firstly, the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) is published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies. The index measures countries' commitment to cybersecurity in five main areas: legal, technical, organizational, capacity building, and cooperation. I am proud to say that we have achieved perfect scores in each of these areas, meeting all 80 criteria of the index, showcasing the UAE's comprehensive approach to cybersecurity.

The UAE's success in cybersecurity is attributed to several key factors. A clear long-term vision and the unwavering commitment of our leaders to building the nation as a global cybersecurity pioneer are essential. In addition, the UAE's approach is characterized by continuous government-wide and whole-of-nation efforts. This encompasses various government entities, private sector organizations, and educational institutions. This collaborative approach fosters a strong cybersecurity ecosystem. It involves not only implementing cutting-edge technologies but also raising cybersecurity awareness among citizens and businesses, ensuring a robust defense against evolving threats.

We are now witnessing the tangible results of this focused and coordinated effort, with the UAE becoming a regional and increasingly global cybersecurity leader. The strategy includes specific overall goals and initiatives that collectively lay a solid foundation for robust cybersecurity. For example, it aims to implement comprehensive legal and regulatory frameworks to address all types of cybercrime, protect existing and emerging technologies, and defend against common cyber threats, ensuring a proactive and adaptive approach to cybersecurity.

Looking ahead, I anticipate that the UAE's cybersecurity strategies and laws will continue to evolve dynamically to adapt to the rapidly changing technological environment. This proactive adaptation is essential because the cyber landscape is in a state of constant flux, with new threats and vulnerabilities emerging continuously, requiring ongoing assessment and refinement.

Therefore, we must maintain our commitment to continuous improvement. This means constantly updating our cybersecurity laws, plans, and initiatives, ensuring that they remain relevant and effective in addressing the latest developments in cyberspace. State and non-state actors employ a range of tactics, including creating and disseminating fake news, using bots and trolls, manipulating social media algorithms, exploiting existing social or racial divisions, manipulating trusted individuals, infiltrating online communities, cyberattacks, and creating AI-generated content, including deepfakes.

The UAE is committed to strengthening its national response to these threats by enacting laws to combat fake news, undermine social cohesion, and infringe on individual privacy. The UAE's top ranking in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index published by the International Telecommunication Union reflects the UAE's determination to combat cyber threats, showcasing its proactive approach to cybersecurity.
