According to the Honolulu Police Department, a 46-year-old doctor was arrested on Monday for allegedly attempting to murder his wife while hiking on Oahu, Hawaii. The incident has garnered widespread attention, and police are currently conducting an in-depth investigation into the matter.
Police stated that anesthesiologist Gehardt Koenig "attempted to push her off the trail and repeatedly hit her in the head with a rock" while hiking with his wife near the Pali Lookout on Monday morning. Honolulu Emergency Services confirmed that they treated a 36-year-old woman for head and facial injuries, and she was taken to a local emergency room in serious condition after the assault.
Police indicated that Koenig was arrested on Monday near the Pali Highway "after a brief foot pursuit" and is currently facing charges. The prosecutor's office stated that it would not comment as the case is under investigation. According to police, Koenig was apprehended after a search lasting more than seven hours.
According to the State of Hawaii Professional & Vocational Licensing database, Koenig obtained his Hawaii medical license in September 2022, and it remained active as of Tuesday evening. A representative for Maui Health stated that Koenig was employed as an independent contractor at Maui Memorial Medical Center and has now been suspended. The representative stated in a statement: "We have been made aware of the allegations against Dr. Gehardt Koenig. Dr. Koenig’s medical staff privileges at Maui Memorial Medical Center have been suspended pending further investigation."
A representative from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center confirmed that Koenig had previously worked at the center but has not been affiliated with UPMC for over two years.
