Top seed Aryna Sabalenka continued her quest for a third consecutive Australian Open title, defeating Denmark's Clara Tauson in straight sets. The match, held at Rod Laver Arena, saw the 26-year-old Belarusian ultimately prevail 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in two hours and six minutes, advancing to the fourth round despite a hard-fought battle.
The match at Melbourne Park featured 11 breaks of serve, with momentum shifting rapidly between the two players. After the match, Sabalenka stated, "It was a tough battle, she played unbelievable tennis, and it was really tough to play against her today. I'm just super happy that I was able to stay in the match and really push myself to the limit and win this match."
The first set saw eight breaks of serve as both players struggled to gain control. Tauson managed to hold serve for the first time in the eighth game. After Sabalenka's fourth break, the 22-year-old Tauson saved four set points to force a tiebreak. Ultimately, the world No. 1 Sabalenka seized her fifth opportunity, winning the first set with a powerful forehand.
The second set followed a similar pattern to the first, with Sabalenka struggling on her serve, but she finally broke serve in the ninth game, the longest of the match with seven deuces. She then comfortably held her serve to close out the match, securing her 17th consecutive victory in Melbourne. Despite three challenging matches, Sabalenka remains undefeated in sets at Melbourne Park in the second week and has now won 30 of her 31 hard-court Grand Slam matches since the start of 2023.
Sabalenka will face either Poland’s Magdalena Frech or 14th seed, teenager Mirra Andreeva, in her next match.
