Abstract: Brighton beat Ipswich 2-0 (Mitoma, Rutter), ending 8-game winless streak. Verbruggen's saves crucial. Ipswich drop to relegation zone.

Brighton secured their first Premier League victory since November, defeating relegation-threatened Ipswich at Portman Road with goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter. Earlier, Ipswich's Wes Burns narrowly missed a shot, while Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made several excellent saves to keep his team's goal intact.

During the match, an unmarked Mitoma opened the scoring for Brighton with a 15-yard shot. Subsequently, João Pedro's attempt was parried away by Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton with a one-handed save. However, in the 81st minute, substitute Rutter found space and time to turn and shoot into the net, sealing the win for Brighton.

Brighton had previously gone eight league games without a win, drawing six of them. This victory lifted them to ninth place in the standings, surpassing Fulham and Brentford. Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler stated, "We've been through a lot lately, and this win should give us confidence and belief. While it wasn't our best performance, we controlled the game and defended well. We created more opportunities in the second half, so we deserved to win. Every win in the Premier League is significant because it's so difficult to win in this league, as we've seen in recent weeks."

This defeat dropped Ipswich to 18th place, back into the relegation zone on goal difference, behind Wolves. Ipswich had previously defeated Chelsea 2-0 in their last home game, marking their first top-flight victory at Portman Road since April 2002. They had hoped to secure another three points in this match to escape the relegation threat. However, Brighton had not won in the top flight since their 2-1 victory over Bournemouth on November 23rd, despite Hürzeler's side’s 4-0 win over Ipswich’s rivals Norwich City in the FA Cup third round at the weekend.

In Suffolk, Brighton dominated possession in the early stages, but they created little beyond two weak shots from Mitoma and Pedro, which were easily dealt with by Walton. Kieran McKenna's team, who were in League One two years ago, gradually grew into the game, but Verbruggen made three excellent saves to deny long-range efforts from Nathan Broadhead, Liam Delap, and Omari Hutchinson. These saves, along with Burns' shot wide from 12 yards, proved costly for Ipswich. Walton also had a fierce collision with Pedro, resulting in a yellow card for the Brazilian and treatment for the Ipswich goalkeeper. Shortly after, just before the hour mark, Walton managed to get a hand to Mitoma's shot but could not prevent it from going in.

Ipswich fans had hoped for a stronger response, but Brighton improved after taking the lead, with Verbruggen facing no threats in the final 20 minutes. Rutter's late goal, his third in two games (having scored twice against Norwich), ensured the Seagulls ended their winless streak. Ipswich had started the round outside the relegation zone, but had temporarily escaped on goal difference on Wednesday after Wolves lost 3-0 to Newcastle. Now Ipswich find themselves in trouble again, facing a tough run of fixtures, starting with a home game against reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday, followed by a trip to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool on January 25th.

McKenna said, "It's certainly a setback. We didn't find the belief and confidence when we went 1-0 down that the game was still there for us, which was disappointing. We know there's a big game coming up, and we have to look forward to those challenges and not shrink when things don't go our way." Brighton will travel to face Manchester United on Sunday, hoping to build on this victory.
