A woman who was convicted and served time for her involvement in the January 6th Capitol riot has rejected a pardon offer from former U.S. President Donald Trump. Pamela Hemphill, a grandmother from Idaho, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 60 days in prison for her role in the violent insurrection.
Hemphill, 71, who calls herself the “MAGA Grandma,” declined the presidential pardon, meaning she will remain on probation. She acknowledged that her actions on that day were "wrong." She told The Washington Post, "I don't want to be part of their attempt to rewrite history. What happened that day was an insurrection."
Hemphill, who served two months for her participation in the January 6th Capitol breach, will continue to be on federal probation for the next nine months. She told the BBC that accepting Trump’s pardon would be “an insult to the Capitol police, the rule of law, and of course, our country.” She added, "I pleaded guilty because I was guilty, and accepting a pardon would also fuel their gaslighting and false narrative."
A lifelong Republican, Hemphill now believes that she and other January 6th rioters stood on the wrong side of history. She stated, “We were wrong that day. We broke the law.” She also added, “There should be no pardons.”
Hours after his inauguration, Trump issued a mass pardon for over 1,500 individuals charged with crimes related to the January 6th incident. He pardoned, commuted sentences, or promised to drop charges in all cases, including those of individuals convicted of assaulting police officers. Trump stated that the pardons would end "the great national injustice perpetrated against the American people over the past four years" and begin "a process of national reconciliation."
