Sean Dyche has been dismissed less than two years into his tenure at Everton, bringing an end to his time in charge at Goodison Park. The 53-year-old's departure was announced just hours before Everton were due to host League One side Peterborough United in the FA Cup third round.
Everton have announced that their U18s coach Leighton Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman will take charge of the team for that match. Right-back Coleman and former left-back Baines have made over 800 appearances for Everton between them. Additionally, Dyche's four coaching staff members – Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer – have also departed.
Everton, who lost 1-0 to Bournemouth on Saturday, currently sit 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone. They failed to register a shot on target at the Vitality Stadium and have won just three of their 19 league games this season. Dyche, whose contract was due to expire this summer, took over from Frank Lampard on January 30, 2023, when Everton were in the relegation zone.
The team secured their Premier League survival with a 1-0 victory against Bournemouth on the final day of that season. Despite the Merseyside club being deducted eight points for two breaches of Premier League financial rules, he still guided Everton to a 15th-place finish in 2023-24. This season, the team has performed well defensively, keeping seven clean sheets, but have struggled in attack, scoring just 15 goals, the second-lowest in the league, ahead of only bottom-placed Southampton.
This will be Everton’s final season at their 132-year-old stadium before they move to their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock. The US-based Friedkin Group completed a £400m takeover of the club last month. Dyche's timeline at Everton shows he was appointed manager on January 30, 2023, with the club 19th in the Premier League, two points from safety. Despite the points deductions, Dyche still guided Everton to 15th place in May 2024, 14 points clear of the relegation zone. However, in January 2025, Dyche was dismissed, with Everton 16th in the Premier League, with the news announced less than four hours before their FA Cup match against Peterborough United.
