Abstract: Cunha, after rumors of a move, scored for Wolves then signed a 4.5-year contract. Coach Pereira calls him loyal, ensuring Wolves stay in Premier League.

Some fans might have thought that the game against Aston Villa last Saturday could have been Matheus Cunha's last appearance in a Wolves shirt. The 25-year-old Brazilian forward has made 23 Premier League appearances for Wolves this season, scoring 11 goals, but there had been rumors for the past month about a potential move away from Molineux.

With the transfer window closing on Monday night, it seemed possible that Cunha might leave with a spectacular farewell goal. In the West Midlands derby, he curled a shot past Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, securing a 2-0 victory for Wolves. However, his celebration was quite telling, as he pointed to the Wolves badge on his shirt, blew kisses to the crowd, and appeared to mimic signing a contract.

Hours later, he actually did sign a deal. Wolves announced at 22:15 GMT that Cunha had signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract. Head coach Vitor Pereira stated after the game that the former Atletico Madrid forward was "loyal to" the club and determined to ensure the team remained in the top flight next season. The victory also helped Wolves move away from the relegation zone.

Pereira said on BBC's Match of the Day: "He knows that in the future he can play for the best teams in England, but he is loyal to us now. He is clear that if he is going to leave, it is essential to keep the club in the Premier League. He has that quality, he is a special player, he has the ability to take the ball and create goals on his own."

Wolves initially signed Cunha on loan from Atletico Madrid in December 2022, in a deal that could potentially total £35 million. He began his professional career at Swiss club Sion in 2017 and has also played for RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin in Germany. Following the announcement of Cunha's new contract, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said: "We can all see his quality on the pitch, and off the pitch he has grown into a leader for the team, and we are delighted he has signed a new contract."

Jeff Shi also added: "It is always important for us to reward our strongest and most influential players, and Matheus deserves this new contract."
