Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the revival of Intervision, an international song contest, as a Soviet-era alternative to the Eurovision Song Contest. He stated that this initiative aims to counter the perceived decadence of modern Western culture, presenting it as a bulwark against unwelcome influences.
President Putin signed a decree on Monday instructing that the Intervision Song Contest be held in Moscow this year. China, Cuba, Brazil, and former Soviet republics such as Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Belarus are expected to participate, showcasing a diverse range of musical talent.
The original Intervision Song Contest was launched in the 1960s as the Soviet Union's response to the Eurovision Song Contest. In ordering the revival of the competition, President Putin instructed senior Kremlin and government officials to prepare for the event, ensuring its smooth execution.
Putin has increasingly sought to portray Russia as a defender of traditional family values, arguing that the West has lost its moral compass in its pursuit of what he sees as excessive individualism and a lack of respect for religious traditions. In contrast to Eurovision, which often celebrates LGBT+ themes and performers, Intervision will adopt a more serious tone, emphasizing respect for "traditional universal, spiritual, and family values," according to documents seen by Reuters.
Planning documents state: "The competition will be open to all countries that wish to participate. Artists must not sing songs that call for violence, humiliate social honor and dignity, and political themes must be completely excluded from the lyrics. Participants must respect the cultural, ethical, and religious traditions of other peoples of the world." In recent years, Russia has introduced strict regulations banning anything considered to promote homosexuality, with the Russian government deeming the international LGBTQ+ movement an extremist organization.
According to documents seen by Reuters, performers will have up to four minutes to sing their songs live in any language they choose. The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize and the opportunity to tour, offering a significant boost to their career.
