Devastating wildfires in Los Angeles have led to numerous celebrities losing their homes, including Mel Gibson, Milo Ventimiglia, and Benjamin Rigby. The fires have claimed at least 11 lives and have leveled multiple communities. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley has called the wildfires "one of the most destructive natural disasters in the history of Los Angeles."
Among the blazes, the fire in the Pacific Palisades area is considered one of the most destructive, sweeping through one of the wealthiest areas of Los Angeles, home to many celebrities, and burning nearly seven hectares. More than 200,000 residents were forced to evacuate, with many unsure if their homes still stand. Many stars took to social media to update fans on their safety after evacuating, while some revealed that their homes had been destroyed.
Mel Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, confirmed that his home is "completely gone." Gibson revealed his home loss while appearing on Joe Rogan's podcast. "I'd be surprised if my house is still there," he said while recording the show at Rogan's studio in Austin, Texas. He also mentioned his son, Milo, is a volunteer firefighter. "I asked him, 'How's it going, Milo?' He said, 'Not good, Dad.' He sent me a video of the neighborhood where I live, and it was just a wall of fire, looked like hell." When asked if the disaster would prompt him to move out of Los Angeles, Gibson replied, "Maybe."
Milo Ventimiglia, star of "This Is Us," also lost his home in the Pacific Palisades to the flames. Adding to the heartbreak, his newly installed crib was also destroyed. CBS cameras captured the actor walking through his burned-out home for the first time after evacuating, standing in what was once his kitchen. "Your heart just breaks," he said. He and his pregnant wife, Jarah Mariano, evacuated with their dogs on Tuesday. They watched via security cameras as flames engulfed their home, destroying everything. "There's a moment you go into shock, 'Oh, this is real, this is happening,'" he said. "And then at some point, we just turned it off and thought, 'What good is it to keep watching?'" Ventimiglia felt there were similarities to his character, Jack Pearson, on "This Is Us," who died after inhaling smoke in a house fire. "It's not a coincidence, life imitates art."
Australian actor Benjamin Rigby returned home to find only a charred staircase. The former "Neighbours" cast member wrote on his Instagram story, "My heart is absolutely broken. Our house is gone." Melanie Zanetti, known for voicing Chilli Heeler in "Bluey," shared a fundraising link to help Rigby and his partner, Darren. "The Silence of the Lambs" star Anthony Hopkins also lost his home in the Pacific Palisades, with video obtained by TMZ showing his home in ruins. The star has yet to confirm the loss on social media. Beyoncé's mother, Tina Knowles, revealed that her bungalow in Malibu was also consumed by the fire. "That was my favorite place, my sanctuary, my sacred place of joy. And now it's gone," she wrote on Instagram. Knowles went on to thank "all of the brave men and women of the fire departments who risked their lives under dangerous conditions." Her message was accompanied by a video of the bungalow's ocean view taken during her birthday weekend.
Anna Faris' representative, the actress of "Scary Movie" and "The House Bunny," confirmed to People magazine that her home was burned down in the wildfires. "Anna and her family are safe and very grateful," the representative told the outlet. Jeff Bridges' representative confirmed to TMZ that the actor's Malibu home, a place he shared with his family, was destroyed in the Pacific Palisades fire. The house, located off the Pacific Coast Highway, had belonged to the star's parents and was not his primary residence. Actress Stella Gregg revealed that the house owned by her famous mother—Jennifer Grey of "Dirty Dancing"—was burned to the ground. "Luckily, she and Winnie (her dog) are safe. Give your loved ones an extra hug today," she wrote on her Instagram story. The home shared by Miles Teller and his wife, Keleigh, was reduced to ash and debris, with only shrubs and a door still standing. Keleigh posted before-and-after photos of their home on Instagram, urging people to leave the community and thanking first responders. "We will come back stronger than ever," she wrote. She added that she wished she had taken her wedding dress when they evacuated.
Actor John Goodman's house in the Pacific Palisades community was among the hundreds of homes that were leveled, according to video obtained by TMZ. The house was completely razed, with only a blackened swimming pool remaining in the backyard. American author, playwright, and philanthropist Candy Spelling told TMZ that her home in Malibu was destroyed in the wildfires. "I am in shock and processing the massive loss for our family. I am so grateful for those memories. It was such a beautiful gift to have." Gary Elwes, star of "The Princess Bride" and numerous other films, wrote on Instagram that his family was safe but that their home in the Palisades was burned. "Sadly, we did lose our home, but we are grateful to have survived this truly devastating fire." Grammy-nominated R&B singer Jhené Aiko shared the news of her home being destroyed by the wildfires on Instagram. "My home with my babies is gone," she wrote. "Burnt to the ground with all of our things. Lord have mercy. Thankful that we still have each other." Australian actress Rebel Wilson and her wife, Ramona Agruma, live with their daughter in the Hollywood Hills. Their home was believed to be in the path of the fire's spread. In an Instagram story, she revealed that her friend had rescued her cat from the wildfires. "Can't believe it," Wilson said.
Actor Adam Brody and Leighton Meester's $10 million home in the Pacific Palisades was reportedly destroyed. Video from Reuters showed what was believed to be the couple's home reduced to a pile of smoking rubble. The couple had attended the Golden Globes Awards on Sunday just days earlier. Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, confirmed that their home of 45 years was destroyed. Crystal wrote, "Janice and I have lived here since 1979. We raised our children and grandchildren here. Every inch of our house was filled with love. The wonderful memories cannot be taken away. We are heartbroken, of course, but with the love of our children and friends, we will get through it." Business mogul Paris Hilton confirmed earlier reports that her beachfront home in Malibu was razed to the ground in an update posted on her Instagram page. "Sitting with my family, watching the news and seeing our home in Malibu burn to the ground on live television is something no one should ever have to experience," she wrote. "This home was where we created so many precious memories. It was where Phoenix took his first steps and where we dreamed of creating a lifetime of memories with London. While the loss is devastating, I am still grateful that my family and pets are safe." TMZ reported that the property was not her primary residence.
Television personality and actress Ricki Lake, known for her role as Tracy Turnblad in the 1988 film "Hairspray," lost her home in the fires. "Everything is gone," she wrote on social media. "I can't believe I'm typing these words. To call it a 'dream home' is an understatement. It was our paradise on Earth. The loss is immeasurable." Actor Jamie Lee Curtis indicated in an Instagram update that she may have lost her home. "My community, possibly my home is on fire," she wrote. "My family is safe. Many of my friends will lose their homes. As will many other communities." The home of "Schitt's Creek" star Eugene Levy was leveled in the fires. The actor and comedian spoke about his evacuation earlier in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, saying the smoke over Temescal Canyon looked "very black and thick." "I didn't see any flames, but the smoke was very black," he said. His son and "Schitt's Creek" co-star, Dan Levy, later wrote on his Instagram story, "Heartbroken for my family, friends, and the people of Los Angeles affected by the devastating fires."
Singer Mandy Moore posted on Instagram that she may have lost her home in Altadena. "I am completely numb," she wrote. "My sweet home. I am heartbroken and devastated for those who have lost so much." On Thursday (local time), she revealed that the "main part" of their house "is still standing for now." "It's not habitable, but mostly intact. We lost the studio where Taylor and Griffin work and all of their instruments and equipment. We lost the garage and the back house," she wrote. "The Hills" stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt lost their property, which was confirmed by Pratt's sister, Stephanie, on Instagram. "Watching my sweet nephews watch their house just disappear is just devastating," she wrote. Earlier, Spencer Pratt shared on Snapchat that he was watching his house being engulfed in flames via a security camera. In an interview with CNN, actor James Woods teared up over losing his home in the Pacific Palisades. "One day you're swimming in the pool, and the next day, it's gone," the "Once Upon a Time in America" actor said. He tearfully recounted how his partner Sarah's eight-year-old niece had tried to help. "She came out with her little snowman piggy bank and said, 'Let's rebuild the house.'"
Tens of thousands of Los Angeles residents have been displaced, waiting for news on whether their homes and businesses survived the flames. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley said that more than 5,300 structures were damaged or destroyed in the Pacific Palisades fire. These numbers are expected to change as additional mapping and surveys are conducted. Actor Jamie Lee Curtis donated $1 million to a relief fund set up for communities affected by the fires in the Los Angeles area. The Oscar winner said in an Instagram post that she and her husband, Christopher Guest, were starting a fund to "support our great city and state, and the great people who live there." Curtis said she was in contact with officials "to see where these funds need to go to have the most impact." The actress appeared tearfully on "The Tonight Show" on Wednesday (local time) and urged people to help the communities affected by the fires. Many celebrities on social media have also voiced their support for non-profit organizations and shared resources to help people find shelter.
The fires have disrupted Hollywood's carefully planned awards season. The American Film Institute (AFI) Awards luncheon, scheduled for Friday, honoring "Wicked," "Anora," and other contenders, was postponed. The Critics Choice Awards, scheduled for Sunday, has been pushed back to February 26. The Oscar nominations have also been delayed by two days to January 19, and the Academy has extended the voting window due to the fires. Flames burned through portions of Palisades Charter High School, which has appeared in numerous Hollywood productions, including the 1976 horror film "Carrie," the 2003 remake of "Freaky Friday," and the television series "Teen Wolf." The fire in the Palisades also destroyed the historic ranch home of Hollywood legend Will Rogers. It was one of numerous structures destroyed in Will Rogers State Historic Park and Topanga State Park. The historic Topanga Ranch Motel, built by William Randolph Hearst in 1929, was also burned down. Rogers' ranch was built on land he purchased in the 1920s. The large property included a 31-room ranch house, a stable, a golf course, and bridle paths. His wife donated it to the California State Parks in 1944.
