Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Chairman Dr. Markus Brand stated that the commission's work transcends the scope of daily politics. Dr. Brand emphasized that the commission is dedicated to providing the people of Fiji with a more truthful and honest perspective on the past, thereby building more constructive future relationships.
During The Lens@177 program on The Fiji Times online platform, Dr. Brand was asked whether the TRC's work would overlap with the 2026 election year. He responded that he has no intention of suspending any work, but the political context must be taken into consideration. He stated that the commission will clarify its true objectives to the Fijian people in the coming weeks, as well as how it will isolate its work from the political activities of Parliament and various parties.
Dr. Brand pointed out that political leaders can play a constructive role in this process, but he hopes they can take a step back and avoid politicizing the truth and reconciliation process and the commission's work. He believes that the election period can also be a good testing phase for practicing better and more constructive ways of communication. He added that it should be ensured that political competition does not exacerbate divisions, trauma, and tensions, but should transcend these and focus more on the issues that voters care about.
