Acting Superintendent Patmosi Wawate stated that Nadela and Muanikoso have been designated as high-risk areas in the Eastern Division. This announcement underscores the serious challenges facing local public safety, demanding significant attention and resources.
Mr. Wawate revealed during an official event on Monday that the Eastern Police Division has received numerous complaints from both communities, both during the day and at night. He confirmed concerns about the increasing number of aggravated robbery cases and the prevalence of drugs in these areas. These issues are severely impacting the quality of life and sense of security for local residents.
Mr. Wawate stated, "We are working to establish a crime prevention committee before March." He added, "The government's initial idea is to cooperate with the public to jointly identify individuals involved in crime." He emphasized that criminal activity in Nadela is rampant, stretching police resources thin due to the constant influx of emergency calls. He also expressed hope that these problems could be eradicated through public cooperation.
"The same situation applies to Muanikoso, where crime rates are also rising," he added. "Muanikoso has been identified as a red alert zone. Aggravated robbery cases have increased from 4 in 2023 to 12 in 2024." Mr. Wawate also pointed out the drug problem in the area, mentioning that Tui Kalabu has already discussed this issue with the community. He emphasized, "We are actively working to address this problem. Police are available for community policing patrols at any time, and we encourage the public to report any concerns."
Mr. Wawate also reminded young people to avoid crime, as it could affect their future opportunities. "We have records of anyone involved in criminal activities, and people need to be mindful of their future," he said. "Some job or overseas opportunities require a police clearance certificate." This reminder is intended to warn young people that criminal behavior can have long-term negative impacts on personal development and prospects.
