A repeat offender burglar in the UK has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after being caught by a "Home Alone"-style trap. Paul Howell attempted to break into a home in Northumberland at 3 a.m. last November, only to fall victim to a trap set by the homeowner.
The residents had set up a trap connecting the house to a bucket of water with a rope, due to several attempted burglaries in the area. Howell triggered the trap and immediately fled the scene, soaked and likely startled.
After discovering the overturned bucket, the residents reviewed their surveillance footage and reported the incident to the police a few days later. Shortly thereafter, 56-year-old Howell was arrested and charged with attempted burglary. The police further charged Howell the following week in connection with two burglaries at another residence.
In that burglary, Howell forced entry into the house and stole a range of items, including jewelry and a bicycle. Howell pleaded guilty to all charges at Newcastle Crown Court last December and was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison.
Detective Constable Jon Mullen of the Northumberland Police described burglary as "an intrusive crime that makes people feel unsafe in their own homes." Mullen stated, "Howell is a prolific offender, and following this sentencing, he will face a significant period behind bars, bringing relief to the community."
