Abstract: Musk, heading Trump's DOGE, will require federal workers to prove weekly accomplishments or face termination, aiming to cut waste. Large layoffs are planned.

Elon Musk, a key aide to U.S. President Donald Trump, has claimed that all federal employees must explain "what they accomplished" in the past week or face the risk of unemployment.

The founder of Tesla and SpaceX, who also heads the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), implied in a post on X that failure to reply to an email requesting proof of productivity would be treated as a resignation.

Musk stated on X: "Per direction from President @realDonaldTrump, all federal employees will soon receive an email asking them to list what work they accomplished last week." This initiative aims to enhance accountability and streamline operations within the federal workforce.

Trump, who initiated large-scale layoffs shortly after taking office in January, has already taken steps to significantly reduce the U.S. federal government workforce. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Musk, has prioritized cutting waste within the federal government workforce.

Trump praised Musk's work on government audits on his own social media platform, Truth Social, and encouraged him to be "even more aggressive." Trump wrote, "Remember, we have a country to save."

Last week, Trump signed an executive order requiring agencies to cooperate with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) "to prepare for the launch of large-scale layoffs." This move signals a continued effort to reshape the federal bureaucracy.

However, the legality of the U.S. President's power to fire federal employees remains complex. Reuters reported that in the United States, most public service employees can only be legally fired for poor performance or misconduct. Furthermore, there are corresponding procedures and appeal rights if workers are terminated.

Trump's personnel management office sent an email to federal employees with the subject line "Crossroads," offering the option of deferred resignation. The White House stated that over 77,000 employees accepted the offer, resulting in a one-time reduction of approximately 3% of the government workforce.
