The Vanuatu National Youth Authority (VNYA) has expressed its gratitude to the new minister for his willingness to collaborate and formally acknowledge its role in implementing youth activities and initiatives. This move signifies a significant advancement for VNYA in gaining government recognition, which is expected to substantially improve its operational effectiveness. Such recognition will empower the VNYA to better serve the youth of Vanuatu.
Michael Tambisari, the Communications and Advocacy Officer for VNYA, stated that the agency has long operated without formal government recognition, leaving them feeling marginalized. "In the past, many departments and individuals did not acknowledge the National Youth Authority. However, with the arrival of the current Minister of Justice and Minister for Youth and Sports, Job Sam Andy, things are changing," Tambisari said, indicating a positive shift in the agency's standing.
Minister Andy visited the VNYA office on Wednesday, meeting with representatives including members of the Vanuatu Sports Authority and the Vanuatu National Youth Council. The purpose of the visit was to discuss a strategic plan to guide their collaboration this year. Tambisari emphasized that the plan focuses on unity among youth organizations and initiatives to re-engage young people in meaningful activities and opportunities.
Tambisari noted that the office currently has a small team of only four staff members who have been working on a voluntary basis. While they have been actively engaging youth, particularly in disaster response efforts, their work has lacked formal government backing. VNYA was established under Act No. 6 of 2018 and formally approved by Parliament in 2019, with staff commencing operations in 2021, marking a crucial step in its development.
Tambisari shared that their office is located at EX-FOL, where young people can seek information and assistance. Furthermore, a new initiative is set to launch to register youth in the community, allowing interested individuals to formally join the organization. The implementation of this program will help expand VNYA's reach and better serve the youth of Vanuatu, ensuring greater participation and support.
