Australia is now opening applications for the new "Vanuatu-Australia Community Grants Program" to communities in all provinces of Vanuatu.
The Australian High Commission (AHC) stated yesterday that the new community grants program builds upon Australia's previous Direct Aid Program, expanding the scope of projects eligible for funding and tripling the program's overall budget, with the maximum funding per project more than tripled. This enhancement will significantly boost community development initiatives.
The expanded eligibility criteria now include the transportation of goods such as roofing iron and timber, high-quality community-owned equipment (including land clearing and basic construction and repair equipment), and sports equipment and uniforms. Furthermore, water tanks, solar lighting, market housing, and other popular projects remain eligible for funding, ensuring a wide range of community needs are addressed.
Ms. Emily Fisher, Acting High Commissioner of the Australian High Commission, stated that the new community grants program is a powerful tool for empowering communities throughout Vanuatu. Ms. Fisher said, "These grants will continue to meet community needs, and we are pleased to announce that we are tripling the funding allocation, with up to 4.7 million Vatu available per project."
Ms. Fisher also stated, "We are also proud that our community grants will directly support Vanuatu businesses and employment – purchasing materials and transportation services for these projects." Applications for 2025 funding are open today and will close on May 1, 2025. This initiative promises to foster local economic growth alongside community development.
