A grandmother from Perth has been extradited from the United Kingdom to face charges of allegedly stealing over AUD $1.6 million from a business in Port Kennedy, Western Australia.
Annie Melanie Lucas appeared in court today facing 103 charges dating back 18 years, when she held an administrative position at a contracting firm. It is understood that she was working as a bookkeeper for the family-run business at the time.
Lucas looked like any other returning traveler as she was escorted by police at Perth Airport. Police allege that she used her position to allegedly deposit "a significant number of business cheques" and "funds directly from company bank accounts into her personal bank accounts."
Lucas presented a different picture on social media. Her profile indicated her love for her husband and children, especially her grandchildren. Western Australian police sent a message to the community today: "No matter the time or distance, investigators will not give up until those responsible are brought to justice."
Annie Lucas made a brief appearance in court today and remained silent, while her family watched from the back row of the courtroom. She is scheduled to reappear next Monday, where she is expected to apply for bail. She is accused of stealing over AUD $1.6 million from her employer between 2007 and 2013.
