Abstract: Gold Coast beaches eroded severely by ex-Cyclone Alfred's record waves. Recovery could take years. Lifeguard tower relocated due to damage.

The Gold Coast beaches are suffering severe erosion following ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, with coastal erosion expert Dr. Michael Kinsela stating that the beaches are being "torn apart."

In an interview, Dr. Kinsela pointed out, "We haven't had a tropical cyclone hit this coastal area in the last 50 years." He added, "We observed waves as high as four stories, causing massive damage to the coastline." For days, destructive waves have been washing away large amounts of sand from the beaches.

Dr. Kinsela further explained, "In an event of this magnitude, it could take years, or even up to a decade, for the beaches to recover to their pre-storm sand volume." He emphasized that the recovery rate will depend on subsequent conditions, including the impact of winter storms.

To prevent a lifeguard tower from collapsing, an excavator was brought to the Gold Coast's Main Beach yesterday to drag the tower back several meters. Due to further erosion, many of the walkways along the beach have been hollowed out, and police have sealed off the entire area.

Record-breaking waves of up to 17 meters were recorded off the Queensland coast near Brisbane yesterday.
